Finally the dirty girl manifesto you’ve been waiting for!
Well… not so fast. I’m not saying you shouldn’t wash your face (or brush your teeth, for that matter), ever. Just that – as is usually the case – timing is everything. I suggest you move your nighttime routine earlier in the evening. Say, right after dinner or before your shower. You’ll be amazed at the difference this
tiny tweak can make. Here’s why:
You’re the Washing Dead.
Stumbling to the bathroom after your nightly Netflix binge and making a few halfhearted swipes with a cleansing cloth over your eyes and cheeks is bound to trigger a zombie apocalypse on your skin. Likewise, those feeble jabs at your teeth with a damp toothbrush? Weak. Earlier in the evening, you’re more awake and will do a much more thorough job. Heck, you might even floss. How crazy would that be?
Your Poor Pores Will Thank You.
You know how good it feels to take your bra off at the end of the day? Or those cute but killer shoes? Your pores breathe a similar sigh of relief when you strip away your makeup or the day’s dirt and oil. You may notice your eyelashes fall out less when you’re not sleeping under a mask of
mascara. (A smoky eye before breakfast? Come on!) And your teeth? So bright and shiny. Hello, natural beauty.
You’ll Give Peace a Chance
A soothing nightly ritual is one of my favorite ways to relax and slough off the stresses of the day. This simple act of self-care –something you do just for you – starts to feel like a little oasis in your day. So when you have a hard test, a fight with a friend or a bad break up, you can turn to your rituals for a few moments of calm and comfort.
You’ll End on a High Note
Adopting this nightly ritual sends the message to
your body that it’s time to wind down and relax. You won’t wipe off your moisturizer falling right onto your pillow. You’ll be less likely to snack in front of
the TV if your teeth are brushed. And you’ll love how much healthier your skin and teeth start looking.
You Can Expand Your Horizons
Since it’s no longer a chore but an act of self-care to wash your face and brush your teeth, why not make them special? Get cleanser that smells great, a moisturizer that makes your skin baby soft. Try a scrub brush or a facial mask. Slap on a whitening strip.
I’d love to hear if you try this. When do you usually wash your face? What other self-care rituals do you love? Tell me everything.
